Day 70. Legacy- 7

We saw in the last blog the courageous and life giving act of Late Captain Vikram Batra, which will inspire any one with national pride and love for the mother land- in all days and years to come.

It is in this connection, the following quote written on the walls of the Army Camp at Shimla, that Anupam Kher read out in a video recently brings out the true valour/mind set of our brave soldiers, who are defending/protecting us from all around enemies all the time of the year.

The words themselves are so courageous/motivating and charging for anyone, more so for  our beloved Jawans', who have taken the solemn pledge to defend the honour of this country at any cost-literally.

मंजिलें मिले मिले, ये तो मुकद्दर की बात है,

हम कोशिश ही करे,ये तो गलत बात है

Who khoon khis matlab ka,

Jis mein ravani na ho

Jo khoon desh ke kaam  na   aa sake

Woh khoon nahi paani hai

Is baat ka koi mahatva nahi hai

Manushya marta khis tarah hai

Abh mahatva iss baat ka hai

Woh jeeta khis tarah hai . ( excuse me for the errors, if any)

Many may not have the courage to join Army. Further all cannot join Army also, as their quota is also not unlimited. But are we ready if there is a chance or need?

1)I am reminded of an anecdote heard from the life of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. In one of the public meetings someone asked him.. Sir you are able to speak almost all languages except  zyz language. For this  it seems he replied…. We have many soldiers from most of the States in the country. But there are hardly anybody from the state you had mentioned. What is the moral of the Story? People from that state were not keen to join Army.

2) I have heard another anecdote.. every woman desires a child like Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.. but he should be born to some other woman… What does that convey?

3) Every one is fond of Sita’s story and sacrifices. But few wants to be in her chappals….What does this mean?

Getting back to the quote above, we need courageous people in all fields,  more so to join  Army . Then only the mother land will be protected and people will be able to sit in studios and other places and  do T V /other debates over trivialities- as seen ad nauseum.

We should be able to recognize Real Heroes and worship them, or at least support their deeds and eulogize them – definitely not  demoralize them- at least- at any time. Unfortunately, lot of learning is needed in the last area.

The current tradition of remembering army people only during calamities must give way to a culture of remembering /honouring them 365 days of  the yea8, as they defend  unconditionally ,the motherland 365x24 perennially.

The above one quote can change life… as it is relevant not only for army people , but for every citizen who loves this great country. What do you think?

Be happy. Be safe.

Day 69.Legacy - 6

I am in the midst of covering some important temples in these blogs. But 2days back I came across a video on Anupam Kher (from his recent Shimla visit), that touched me much and I promptly shared with a few of my friends (which I will cover in the next blog now as a sequel to what is to follow) …. And today (5.7.2021) I received this from a very senior official. It moved me beyond words, then I thought of putting it first  immediately…. I am reproducing it verbatim.

*IT HAS BEEN MORE THAN 20 YEARS SINCE THIS EVENT TOOK PLACE.... *

It’s Almost a Year Past., A Letter from a Village in the State of Himachal Pradesh., Came to Ministry of Defense. The Writer Introduced Himself as a School Teacher and Puts Forward a Request....

It Says., if Possible that His Only Son Has Died a Heroic Death in the Kargil War and that the Day of His First Death i.e., Memorial Day is Coming in a Few Days i.e. On 07/07/2000 and On the Day of Remembrance of His Son's Death., He and His Wife would Like to See the Place where His Son Died. It's Okay if You Can't., if it is Against National Security., and Letter also Says that He is Withdrawing His application.

The Department Officer Who Read the Letter., Said., It Does Not Matter whatever the Cost I will Pay (if Not Paid by the Department) from my salary., to Bring the Teacher and His Wife to the Place where the Boy had Died and An Order Issued Accordingly.

On the Day of Remembrance of the Deceased Hero., the Elderly Couple Brought to the Ridge with Due Respect. When He was Taken Near the Place where His Son had Died, everyone who were on Duty Stood Erect and Saluted.

There was Only One Soldier., with Hand-Full of Flowers., Bowed and Sprinkled on the Teacher's Feet and Rubbed His Eyes and then He Stood Upright and Saluted Like Everyone Else.

The Teacher was Stunned and Said... “You are a Great Officer...  Why should You Touch My Feet and Worship..? Like Others could have Saluted and I would have Greeted You in Return..!”

No Sir. Here I am a Slightly Different from Others., i.e. Everyone who have Been Here on Duty and., Posted Less than a Year or So.” “I was with Your Son who Fought with the Pakistanis on the Same Mountain Ridge in the Same Regiment., and the One who Saw Your Son’s Heroism Live on the Field. and Not Only that....” He Stopped for a Moment....

The Teacher Took the J.C.O's Hand and Said “Tell me... Whatever it is Tell Me without any Fear... I will Not Cry.....”“I Know You will Not Cry., Sir... but I Should Not Cry'na....” the J.C.O. Continued....

“That's where the Pakistanis were Shooting Hundreds of Bullets Per Minute with Their H.M.G. Five of Us Advanced Up to a Distance of Thirty Feet., and We were Just Lurking Behind that Rock to Watch. The Pakistanis are Also on the Verge of Retreating and Saw the Rock (Us). Just., if They could able to See Us (Bit of Leg., Hand or Even Our Kit) is Enough to Shatter the Bullets On Us. Indians Progress in the Scale of Brigade Strength is Yet to Begin. We Don't Know what to Do..!! then....” The J.C.O. Sighed a Little.

“What Happened..?” the Teacher Enquired... J.C.O. Continued.....

“Their Shooting will be Going On... No Point in Wasting Time... I am Going to Do the ‘Death Charge’ this Thirty Feet., i.e., I am Going Take Their Bullets On Me., and Run to Their Bunker and Throw the Grenade. After Destroying., You All Capture Their Bunker and about to Run Towards Their Bunker with Grenade.”

“That’s when Your Son Looked at Me. ‘Are you Crazy..? Your Wife and Children are Depending on You., and I am Still Unmarried., and I will Do  the Death Charge and You Do the Covering’ and without waiting for an Answer., He Ran for ‘Death Charge’ after Taking the Grenade Forcibly from Me”

“Bullets Shattered Down Like Rain from Pakistani H.M.G. Your Son Dogged Over and Reached the Pakistani Bunker., and Took the Pin of the Grenade and Threw it Right into the Bunker and Sent Thirteen Pakistanis to Death. H.M.G. was Paralyzed and the Area Came Under Our Control.”

“I was the First to Lift and Evacuate Your Son's Body. Sir., He had Forty-Two Bullets in His Body., Sir. I Lifted His Head in My Hand., Only then He Breathed His Last Breath. I asked the Superior to Give the responsibility for Bringing the Coffin to Your Village., but., Sir., Refused and another Important Duty to Do.”

“Maybe had I had the Privilege of Lifting the Coffin I would have Put These Flowers at His Feet. I couldn't., but I have the Privilege of Putting These flower at Your Feet., Sir.” and J.C.O. Ends with a Sigh.

The Teacher's Wife of was Covering Her Mouth with Sari and Crying Silently. The Teacher didn't cry., and Looked at the J.C.O. decisively and the Soldier Didn't Cry., and Saw the Teacher.

Don't Know what the Teacher Thought. From Shoulder Bag He Took a Package and Handed Over to the Soldier and said., “I bought a Shirt to My Son to Wear on when HE Come to Town on Leave., but He Didn't. Then Came., the News of His Heroic Death...”

Now., Who will Put on that Shirt... I Brought it to Keep it where He Died. Maybe He will Come to This Place as a Vapor and Let it Put it on., but Now I Know Who is to Wear This Shirt. Without Refusing., Please Take This.”

Tears Rolled Down on the eyes of the Soldier., who Reached Out and Took it.

One last thing the Kargil Hero's Last Word was *JAI HIND*

NOW ITS TIME TO KNOW......

Kargil Hero's Name :  Captain Vikram Batra.

Hero's Father Name : Girdhari Lal Batra.

Hero's Mother Name : Kamal Kanta.

P. S. : My Dear Friends., These Peoples are Our Real Heroes. Unquote

Civilians, who may not have held a grenade or even seen one except in movies, are demanding evidence for surgical strikes or disputing the heinous Pulwama massacre of CRPF Jawans’. Be that the case one must salute the supreme sacrifice of Captain Vikram Batra for our mother land and also share in the sorrow of his great parents-though this has happened decades ago. It is because soldiers like Capt. Batra gave their life for the mother land, many are now able to do endless debates on the TV and social media !. Jai Hind.

(Such real incidents must be included in the course syllabus for our children. There are plenty of heroes down the centuries, if one cares to recall them. Not what was being covered/taught earlier during our student days. I have absolutely no idea of current curricula though.)

Be happy. Be safe.

Day 68. Legacy- 5

Madurai Meenakshi Sundereswarar Temple at Madurai, Tamil Nadu is a must visit temple for any devotee. The temple complex is huge and full of carved stone pillars. The main deities include  Goddess, Shiva and Ganesha. There  are  a number of  other deities too.

The temple is famous for the 1000 pillared-ayirakkal- hall.

The temple has a nice pond attached to it, which in the night time reflects the temple itself.

Walking through the temple itself will take some time and effort. With 4 huge gopurams / entrances,  the temple architecture is awesome indeed. One  can spend days to study and enjoy /learn the artwork of the temple.

Many kings from different dynasties have contributed for the construction/modifications of the temple, such that it is developed and maintained as one of  the great temples of mother India. The temple was originally built around 1190.

My  own visit to the temple was for a very brief period, hence not able to elaborate much. Suffice to say, it is a temple worth visiting again and again.

Recently our  Hon. PM had visited the temple and a detailed  video of the visit is available on the net, which gave a closer  look into the various features of the temple complex.

(Our Hon. PM has devoted much time to visit  Hindu Temples and offer prayers, that had not taken place since independence. His visits helped the common man also to get closer views of many temples and to understand the  significance better. I fondly recall the videos on his visits to Tirupati Balaji Temple, Muktinath Temple,Nepal among others.)

Be happy. Be safe.

Day 67. Legacy- 4

Somanath temple is located in Gujarat  and is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the 12 Jyotir Lingas. This is considered as the first Jyotir Lingam

The temple is near the Sea and is indeed picturesque going by the videos. I have not visited .

This temple has much historical significance as  it was attacked by  invaders time and again and attempts have been made to destroy it. But like Phoenix it has risen again and now it is a beautiful and imposing temple structure,  that is the strength  of the Sanatana Dharma.

Dharma can never be destroyed.. this people should remember/realise and India is a country of Dharma...

Bhagavad Gita starts with  Dharmakshetre Kurukshetre... what a legacy for the present and future.

Knowing the history and glory of such temples will help to create awe and devotion in the minds of people. Visiting the temple will be a great boon, I am sure  God willing, one may still go there.

Today grand Aartis performed at the temple are available online such that one is able to have a Darshan of the beautiful Shiv  Lingam of the Lord and pray even from a distance.

If not in person, at least visit virtually. But visit without fail.

Be happy. Be safe.

Day 66. Legacy- 3

Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple,Rameshwaram  located at the southern tip of India is an imposing temple structure dedicated to Lord Shiva.  This is one of  the 12 Jyotir Lingas.

There are many legends about the temple. First and foremost, it is believed that Lord Sri Rama consecrated the temple before his visit to Lanka to free Sita Devi from the clutches of Ravana.

The temple is visited by  many from all over the country. It is located at an isolated place and one has to  cross a long bridge (by  road /rail). The railway bridge was washed away a few decades back and then re-built.

The temple houses many deities, main being Lord Shiva. There is a Spadika Lingam, darshan of which is available in the early morning only. The temple has huge corridors studded  with stone pillars, which are worth seeing.

The temple complex has many wells, having different flavours of theertham. Devotees take bath from the waters of different wells as part of their pilgrimage/ rituals.

All in all Rameswaram temple will give great  tranquillity to both eyes and mind.

A must see temple for any devotee.

Be happy .Be safe.

Day 65. Legacy- 2

Sree Anantha  Padmanabha Swami temple at Thiruvananthapuram is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

A temple with a very imposing Gupuram, that can be seen from far and a verybig temple pond too.

The temple itself is so awe inspiring. The temple complex is very large with a large number of huge stone pillars. Walking through the temple will make one wonder about the effort and skills of the artisan of that age and also the will of the Kings who have taken up such noble task.

Here the lord is in a reclining position. The statue is very big( 18 feet) and cannot be seen in one go. In fact, 3 doors have been kept to have Darshan of  Lord's head , middle and lower portions .)

The temple took some 40 years to construct. Every day the Maharaja goes for  the Darshan of the Lord and if he fails, he has to put a fine for not coming to the temple, which the royal family complied with meticulously.( That is Indian culture!)

A Darshan will leave a long lasting impression in the devotees mind. Recently the wealth of the temple has come up for lot of discussions.

The Maharajas of Travancore have been devotees-dasas- of the Lord and some of them have composed beautiful hymns on Lord Vishu, which are worth listening. Laksha Deepam festival here attracts huge crowds every year.

(A nearby temple- Thiruvattaru- AdiKeshava Perumal  Temple- is having a similar idol of 22 feet with 3 entrances for Darshan

( I happen to see videos of the 108 Divya Desams (covering Vishnu temples) in TN and Kerala/other states too which were  praised by Alwars in their Keertans. The experience was indeed thrilling. I could see – al beit virtually-the temples, know about the deities ,festivals, understand the stories linked with those temples etc. by watching those  videos, I could get a feel of all the 108 temples. I had seen 7 of them located in Kerala and outside TN, including   Sree Anantha Padmanbabha temple .)

Be happy. Be safe.

Day 64. Legacy -1

Satyam Eva Jayate -Truth alone triumphs- from Mundaka Upanishad is adopted as the national motto of India in 1950.Most of the people believe in the said Upanishad mantra.

Be that the case, in the world , since time immemorial, we have seen the victory of falsehood also- in family, business, kingdoms, governments, corporate world, international scenario etc. … at least in the short run.

As there are always two sides to anything , there are supporters for the evil too in plenty. Further, none can do anything when the evil is perpetrated, and many times they can be only mute witnesses…specific cases are not cited.

Without elaborating, one can thus say that evil also had its time in the world and continue to have it. As the people are an admixture of good and bad elements- godly and asuras- the situation will get repeated, ad infinitum, whether one wishes or not. One can only pray that one is not a victim of  acts of barbarism.

In this blog the focus is to develop Spiritual Quotient such that one is able to go on despite such happenings /setbacks… for which one should have faith, trust, and above all pride in one’s culture, teachings and heritage.

A civilization is preserved through its legacy. Hinduism is fortunate that it has rich legacies that cannot be rivalled by any other religions of date. But then one must be willing to see it with an open mind.

Many have no idea about many things in Hinduism.  How many Hindu students, even up to final college level ,will be able to cite just one of the works of  Adi Shankarachrya? Some one can make a start with their own children or grandchildren. Be that the case, the Sringeri Shankara Pitham/Math is taking efforts to spread the chanting of Soundarya Lahiri across states. One such programme  held at Bangalure, I saw on YouTube being addressed, among others by our Hon .Prime Minister, in 2017. A similar recitation Yagnya is planned in Kerala State in November,2021.

One of our rich legacies is the  awesome temples across the length and breadth of the nation and a large number of them  with 1000 years plus history. Remembering them even will enrich one and then what to speak if one is able to visit them in person.

A brief tour of some select 20 temples are covered to share the rich temple legacy of Hinduism.

The first temple, covered is the renovated Kasi Viswanath temple at Varanasi. Though  I have not visited the same, a video of the renovated temple is in circulation. The renovated temple, full of marble structure is a beautiful and enchanting sight.

The temple accommodates some 100 plus Shiva Lingas of different sizes and colours. There is a sectsion  for 12 Jyotir Lingas, in the background one could see the murtis of Shiv- Parvati, Vishnu- Mahalakshmi, Hanuman and  Adi Shankara.

The inside dome of the temple is simply mind blowing. Even from the brief video clippings one’s mind swells with pride and devotion to Lord Shiva. How much more it will be if one is able to see in person!

This temple partially reminded me of the Pasupatinath temple of Nepal, which I had the good fortune to visit. There also, I saw some 100 plus Shiva Lingas attached to the main precincts of the temple. The Nandi-bull- in that temple is so huge and imposing in golden colour- a sight to watch indeed.

It is visits to such temple that will remind  one about the great glory of the past and of course  the richness of Hindu religion/heritage/culture.

Our youngsters should be able to explore them.. Parents should take the lead.

( As details of such temples are now  easily available on the net, I don’t intent to make these as a research blogs).

Be happy. Be safe.
