WHY WE WORK-Barry Schwartz
The title of the book
will attract the attention of all because people spend major time in life doing
work- either for self or for others. Work for self is not generally included under the work category by most because one is not able to disassociate self
and work (from self) sufficiently, just
as one may not be able to distinguish Body, Mind
and life force, till someone
explains them clearly.
That apart the question is why we work at all for others.
- Common answer would be to make a living.
- That is correct too to an extent.
- In a seminar someone
replied that the reason for working is
to pay the EMI!
- But then according to the author of the book" it’s not about the money.“
- When you ask people who are fulfilled by their work why they do the work they do, money almost never comes up.
·
The list of non-monetary
reasons people give for doing their work is long and compelling.
·
According to the author “satisfied workers are engaged by their
work. Satisfied workers are challenged
by their work"
· Author adds that “satisfied people do their work because they feel that they are in charge. These people do their work because it’s an opportunity for social engagement." They do many of their tasks as part of teams, and even when they’re working alone, there are plenty of opportunities for social interaction during work’s quiet moments. People are satisfied with their work because they find what they do meaningful. Potentially, their work makes a difference to the world. It makes other people’s lives better. And it may even make other people’s lives better in ways that are significant.”
The above points taken
from the book are significant in our work life.
· In USA there was a report that persons working for some of the MNCs are already multi-millionaires, still they work for the sheer passion for doing something useful to the society at large.
· The book is a must read
for people looking for a wider horizon in their life- like reaching the self-
actualization stage referred by Abraham Maslow.
Be peaceful.
