Day -174

 Barons of Banking

I had the opportunity to read a book called Barons of Banking, which covers the life and times of six stalwarts who played great role in the field of banking and finance.

·         They are-

1.Sir Pochkhanawala( founder of Central Bank of India),

2. Sir P Thakurdas,

3.C B Deshmukh( first Indian RBI Governor),

4. HT Parekh( Founder of HDFC),

5.RK Talwar( Chairman of SBI) and

5.AD Shroff ( Chairman of Bank of India and the New India Assurance Company Limited).

The book deals at length about their individual background and contributions.

o     I was especially struck by the  life of Sir PT.

# It came as a great surprise to note that he was a member on the board of over 70 companies/Institutions including that of the RBI.

#The role played by him during the British era and the efforts put by him to push the Indian business community and people were highly inspiring.

# It is stated that he played a great role and succeeded in ensuring that Late Deshmukh becomes the first Indian Governor of RBI. Great indeed.

The books help to understand the banking scene  prior to Independence and the struggle faced by the stalwarts listed here above.

  • It will be of interest to researchers to understand the evolvement of  Indian Banking in the early part of the last century...
  •  it will interest the faculty to understand the banking perspective in the country...
  •  it  is a must for the Top management to understand  how those stalwarts overcame the challenges posed by  the then economy and  system.

Be peaceful.

Vande Mataram.
