Sree Anantha Padmanabha Swami temple at Thiruvananthapuram is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
A temple with a very imposing Gupuram, that can be seen
from far and a verybig temple pond too.
The temple itself is so
awe inspiring. The temple complex is very large with a large number of huge
stone pillars. Walking through the temple will make one wonder about the effort
and skills of the artisan of that age and also the will of the Kings who have
taken up such noble task.
Here the lord is in
a reclining position. The statue is very big( 18 feet) and cannot be seen in
one go. In fact, 3 doors have been kept to have Darshan of Lord's head , middle
and lower portions .)
The temple took some 40 years to construct. Every day the
Maharaja goes for the Darshan of the Lord and if he fails, he has to put a fine for not
coming to the temple, which the royal family complied with meticulously.( That is Indian
culture!)
A Darshan will leave a long lasting impression in the
devotees mind. Recently the wealth of the temple has come up for lot of
discussions.
The Maharajas of Travancore have been devotees-dasas- of the Lord and some of them have composed beautiful hymns on Lord Vishu, which are worth listening. Laksha Deepam festival here attracts huge crowds every year.
(A nearby
temple- Thiruvattaru- AdiKeshava Perumal
Temple- is having a similar idol of 22 feet with 3 entrances for Darshan
( I happen to see
videos of the 108 Divya Desams (covering Vishnu temples) in TN and Kerala/other states too which
were praised by Alwars in their Keertans.
The experience was indeed thrilling. I could see – al beit virtually-the
temples, know about the deities ,festivals, understand the stories linked with
those temples etc. by watching those
videos, I could get a feel of all the 108 temples. I had seen 7 of them
located in Kerala and outside TN, including Sree Anantha Padmanbabha temple .)
Be happy. Be safe.
