Day 40. Review- 9

 ·        We are living in a society full of complexities and uncertainties. But the top most is religious discord/disharmony- not only in India but across the world.

Some eight or ten major religions are seen in the world with hundreds of variants. All are running parallel like a hundred-minute dash, without much of convergence.

Hence the followers are on warpath down the millennia. Some where I read that maximum wars were fought on religious ground than any other reason. That is the legacy for the mankind. What will be the future? It is anybody’s guess.

A friend of mine once told on the lunch table that one should avoid politics and religion in  discussions, as that will eventually lead to tension!

At that time, I felt odd with his suggestion, as we were of an equal status and background, though belonging to different religions and states.

But looking back, I now feel that he was quite right.

Bhagavad Gita is the supreme text adored by the Hindus, by and large and it is being discussed and listened to by many on numerous occasions. But it is observed that the listener is not much wiser after such repeated sessions.

What is the cause? Is it that the text is too difficult to comprehend? Whether the explanation is not complete or clear?

The answer was given by Swami Chinmayananda, one of the greatest exponents of  Bhagavad Gita . He stated that such persons are merely hearing but not listening.

Hearing is mechanical, and forgotten immediately, but listening involves thinking too, such that he will be able to recall the teachings later on. One can judge to which category one belongs- hearing or listening?

Hence Swamiji recommended that one should develop listening skills to understand/grasp such scriptural texts.

This is equally applicable to reading/seeing too. Are we really focussing?

The answer will mostly be -No, such that after many years , no progress seems to have been made, especially in the spiritual path.

Is it not worth reflecting ?

Be happy. Be safe.
