Day 220

 The Professional – Subroto Bagchi

I received a WhatsApp message sometime back which contained an extract of a chapter from the above book. That prompted this blog.

I had the occasion to read this book a few years back and since then I had quoted it in many classes dealing with competence building.

The professional has been described in the book as having the following two  cardinal qualities viz.

1. He completes the given work on time.

2. He works without any supervision.

Both these are in rare supply in the working arena of date….

Most of the time such traits are missing completely… even at high places..

·       we have been brought up in a supervision oriented set up, whether at home, school, playground etc.

·       if the supervision is lacking then the result is anybody’s guess. Even in  education the need to work in a professional manner is not emphasized sufficiently…

·        policing becomes an integral part of society.

Hence the importance and relevance of the book.

·       It will be useful, if the Book’s contents are covered in schools ,training centres , colleges and especially B Schools, such that we may have a generation which will follow the traits covered in the book- in their life.... VOLUNTARILY, WILLINGLY AND SINCERELY.

An l example of a true Professional came to notice recently… from a WhatsApp forward and video as under-

Quote-CHENNAI RAINS (of November 2021). A man who was working in the Kilpauk Cemetery (Chennai) was drenched in the rains for the past few days and had fainted. However, passers by noticed him, thought he was dead and informed the T.P.Chathiram Police Station. Lady inspector Mrs.Rajeswari visited the spot and found there was still life in this man. Without wasting even a minute she carried him on her back, placed  him in an auto rickshaw and got him admitted to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where this man is presently under convalescence! There are still humans in this world!!”  Unquote

The video showed her humanity and the efforts she took to send him to the Hospital… May she be blessed by the God in her career and life!!

We should  endeavour to nurture  such a culture with noble qualities in all citizens….Incidentally one of my books is Nurturing Excellence (2006).

  • We need more such professionals, especially, in the Government sector as IT HAS COMMANDING CONTROL OVER THE ECONOMY AND LIFE OF PEOPLE.

  1. I have read all the books of Subroto Bagchi and his personal journey. Also touched by his affection for his mother as described in the book Go and Kiss the world.
Infact there was a beautiful article in Business World around mid 90s about how Mindtree was conceptualised.
