Day 199

  Mind Set of a "Fakir"

A few years back in a public interview with Prasoon Joshi in London ,

the PM had promised to share one of his poems, an English translation of which carried in The Telegraph( available on the net) is as under.

The poem is in Gujarati  titled Ramata Ram Akela.( I Am the Lonely wanderer)

Taru Meghanee Kajaria, a senior journalist and

columnist, translated the poem into English for The Telegraph.

Poem

This twilight hour and I, the lonely wanderer

My entire being surging with exuberance of the Tarnetar *

Neither owe to, nor claim from anyone, nothing mine or thine,

Whatever the world has, commonly shared by choice.

My path is simple and straight, no logjam, no pushing to and fro,

This twilight hour and I, the lonely wanderer.

Neither any sect nor cult, a human after all is human,

Does it make any difference to the light,

be it a tiny earthen lamp or a lantern?

Never exhibited as those glittering chandeliers,

This twilight hour and I, the lonely wanderer.

*A popular fair named after a village in Gujarat's Surendranagar district

This came up when he was asked as to what is the source of his “ FAKIR”

like outlook in life. Citing the above poem written long back in Gujarati,

he gave some instances from his life.

  •       That he was never attracted by the gifts and other things in life. in fact

all the gifts and presents he received as a CM he had given to the

treasury and asked them to auction the same. He stated that a sizeable

amount came out of such auctions that was given for the Girl Education Fund…

  •   Another personal incident he cited. While leaving for New Delhi to take

over as the PM, he had called his officers   and told them that whatever

savings are lying in his account to be used to create a fund to give

some scholarship to the children of the Sachivalaya staff in the peon or

driver category… initially they refused stating that he should keep

some money for himself but after much persuasion, he added that,

they agreed to take some part of the savings to create a small fund.

From the above one can gauge the mind set of the Hon. PM. Being inducted

to a spiritual way of Life since childhood and having come from a life of

poverty, he understands the pulse of the poor of the country and hence

his conduct is in alignment with that thinking.

He also added that as he was brought up in such “Abhav”—lack of- in life,

he is not having any  Prabhav”- attraction/liking- for such items…

Yes, that is the thinking of a Fakir or Sanyasi like person…

As such practitioners are rare/non-existent in this world,

 one gets naturally surprised.
