Discuss or Maintain Silence
I came across a video recently that contained
a story similar to the all-familiar Frog in the well one.
The narrator here is a foreigner… the story in brief.
- Once there was dispute between a donkey and a tiger over the color of the grass. The donkey insisted that it is Blue which was refuted by the tiger saying that it is green. they approached Lion for a finality in the matter. Donkey represented the case first. and the Lion stated that if you think it is blue then it is blue… donkey was overjoyed and stated that the King should punish the tiger… Lion agreed to kill the tiger afte3 days and the donkey went away … happily.
Now the twist comes. Tiger approached
the Lion and asked how he could take such a decision knowing well that grass is
green and donkey is wrong… here Lion agreed with the tiger and stated… issue is
not about the color of grass. The issue is how an intelligent animal like Tiger
entered into an argument with an ass over such a trivial matter and knowing
fully the truth disturbed the Lion with such a stupid issue….
· Then the moral of the story is told by the narrator…
· He stated that in the
world, there are plenty of people holding different views… even when knowing
they are wrong…
· But having taken a
position they will hold on to it till the end….
· It is foolish, like the
tiger did, to talk, engage and debate with such elements… this is the learning
point…
· Each can draw their own lessons from this narration…
· It is an open subject…
but its resemblance to the Frog in the well story prompted to write this blog.
I
recall a Vidura Vakya heard long time back…marriage, friendship and debates
should be among equals.
Be peaceful.

Quite true. Getting into a needless debate and insisting on having won the same gives the person immense pleasure for 2 reasons. One is his ego gets inflated and two he proudly can exhibit his 'talent' that he is indefeatable. I fully agree one should never argue on enter into a debate about religion, one's superiority over the other.

I heard this story before also.
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right in quoting the Vidura vakya and it is relevant at all times.
No point in wasting time and energy in arguing irrelevent subject to irrelevent people. Many times silence is golden and many more times it speaks volumes.
Your blogs are really interesting and I am going through it but I reply only on few occasions.
Good luck and good wishes.

Dear Dr, This is in connection with blog 190. Should one talk or remain silent. One should cross 5 gates before speaking/talking/communicating. Gate No. 1: Is it true? 2. Is it usefull to the speaker. 3. Is it useful to the listener,? 4. Is it usefull to the society. 5. Is it usefull to the world in the long run? Rarely one can cross All the 5 gates. So, silence is golden. Krishnan
