To be or not to be; that is the question
Hamlet, is written by William Shakespeare sometime between 1599 and 1601. It is Shakespeare's longest play.
Hamlet is considered among the most powerful and
influential works of world literature, with a story capable of "seemingly endless retelling and
adaptation by others".
The following soliloquy by Hamlet may echo with the questions that grapple a human mind at one
time or other.
To be, or not to be: that is the question: Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep; No more; and by a sleep to say we end. The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to, ’tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep ……( Hamlet-Act 3 Scene 1)
Even if one is familiar
with Hamlet , still,
· it will be profitable
to watch the Play and movie once again-available on the net- to understand its
philosophical and spiritual messages- which are relevant to humanity…. at any age….and time…
·
The dialogues in
the play repeatedly touch on the ephemeral nature of life itself in great detail….
Hence the play will be eternally
relevant…. due to its arresting plot and philosophical undertones….
Some of the famous
quotes from the play are-
1 "Why, then, ’tis none to you, for there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
2 "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
3 "To be or not to be—that is the question.
4 "Thus conscience does make
cowards of us all;
5 "Show me the person who’s master of his emotions, and
I’ll put him close to my heart.
6 "This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day,Thou canst not then be false to any man.
7 "The rest is silence”.
Be Peaceful.
