Day 145

 Man’s Search for Meaning -3

The following was received through WhatsApp a couple of days back…

PARENT’S HOUSE*By Khalil Gibran

*It's the only house* where you can go to dozens of times without an invitation.

*The only house* where you can put the key in the door and enter directly.

*The house* that has loving eyes that stare at the Door until they see you.

*The house* which reminds you of your care free days, stability and your happiness during your Childhood.

*The house* in which your presence and look at your mother’s and father’s faces is for you a bliss and your conversation with them is a reward.

*The house* that if you do not go, the hearts of its owners will shrink.

*The house* in which two candles were burnt to light up the world and fill your life with happiness and joy.

*The house* where the dining table is pure for you and has no hypocrisy.

*The house* that if the food time arrives and you don't eat, the hearts of its owners will be broken and annoyed.

*The house* that offers you all the laughs & Happiness.

*Oh Children*, find out the value of these houses before it's too late.

*Lucky are those who have their parents’ house to go to. *

- KHALIL GIBRAN

There is lot of  meanings in the above lines.

·       Only those who lack their parents will know the full import.

  • However, people who have their parents generally take them for granted, going by the reports from different quarters..

Be that the case, the meaning is here that you will find fully comfortable only in YOUR own house.

Parents house is your own, as you are born and brought up there and it belongs to your father/mother, who brought you to this vast world.

All else who came in life are “others” always and not your own, what ever be the relations. It is linked to what one can give or get in the relation. Such relations can get terminated or turn sour at any time…

Further, we are nowadays keen to travel, within the country and even outside… but where ever you go, till you get back to Your OWN home, you feel uncomfortable. In foreign countries you have to carry your passport all along.

Once that is missed /lost then the life becomes TRULY miserable on the foreign land….

Then comes migration and citizenship, which people are now craving and many getting too. What is their status… heart of heart … it cannot be as if one is in own native country… all are adopted relations…? hence it has the qualities of a secondary relation… adopted country, place, relations all will be only having ADOPTED STATUS.

These are issues to be reflected. Only those who lose their “Own” places can understand the value. One will not be able to appreciate or judge it.

Kashmiri Pandits are yearning to go back to Kashmir as they were forcibly driven out in 1989. They are spread all over India. But that cannot give them the full joy as they are away from their motherland. Birth place… India is our country will not give them the solace…  as each state has a language too… the tie to the native /birth place/state is strong among us.

  • All those things are linked in the poem by Gibran…. So long as parents, especially mother is there, life is different. Once they have gone… one becomes an orphan at heart…. Though none may admit it openly as it will be futile, any way….

Many people were driven out of their home land… during partition, ethnic cleansing…riots… religious pressures…

people who have not faced such events will not be able to empathize with such victims…

We can ONLY sympathise, but will never be able to empathise, with them… honestly speaking.… matter deserves reflection.

Be happy. Be safe

  1. You are absolutely on spot when you talk of uprooted people by force and violence or migrated people for job, career or for any other purpose. All these people will miss their parental home where they were born, nurtured or grew as Khalil Gibran has beautifully described as the joy of parental home. Everyone longs to go back to that home which was so inviting so caring so comforting so enliving and so soul touching. All other places in comparison fail the test provided that your own family which you raise as married person later in life provides you the same feeling which your parental home gave. This is for somebody to vouchsafe.
