Day 144

Man’s Search for Meaning of life -2

I reproduce a  few apt lines of a song from the film Hum Dono ( 1961) which has  war as its background.

kabhi khud pe, kabhi halaat pe rona

kisliye jeete hai ham

kisliye jeete hai ham kiske liye jeete hai

baarha aise sawalaat pe rona aaya

baarha aise sawalaat pe rona aaya

kabhi khud pe

kaun rota hai kisi aur ki khatir ai dost

kaun rota hai kisi aur ki khatir ai dost

sabko apni hi kisi baat pe rona aaya

sabko apni hi kisi baat pe rona aaya

kabhi khud pekabhi khud pe, kabhi halaat pe rona aaya

baat nikli, to har ik baat pe rona aayakabhi khud pe

In the song, the Hero is raising questions regarding the meaning and purpose of life and becoming sad over it… Rona Aya... are the words used. Ditto with all of us, when we start pondering over the events happening around, same questions crop up…  what for, for whom and why we are all living?

·       On the one side Doctors’ give up their lives to save people, on the other hand terrorists, anti-social elements /nationals kill people mercilessly-a la 9/11 or CST massacre by Kasab and co.

So, the song of 1961 still lives with all intensity.

·       Since then, how many lacs have cried over the death, destruction- humans and others.

·        How many wars, India alone fought since then, how many were killed, maimed and orphaned.

·       How much wealth was wasted and even now wasting…?

Across the border, what happened and is happening even now…. So why we are all living…a question that begs an easy answer…

  • Each parent looks forward to a child with all eagerness, mothers bring them up with all care, love and blessings….
  • Then they are killed on road accidents, by terrorists, or in wars or by kidnappers or Naxals… or in riots… or by bomb blasts …or some wayside thugs or drug addict….
  •  So, the song rings true always. why indeed we are living and for what purpose…

·       A question a deer can ask in the wild jungle, why it was born at all…. To become mere fodder for the lion or tiger or wolves--- and how ruthlessly it is killed and eaten…

So, coming back to the stark reality of life since beginning, it is the order of the nature, like in forest--- jungle raj….

·       Animals are born to become the food of other animals… Fishes are born in Sea to become the food of other fishes and even human beings…. so, the cycle of creation/destruction continues… should one cry over the inevitable…

·       Animal hunting has come down, now replaced by man hunting man has become the order of the day….la James Bond movies in REAL life…

Crying over that is an option one can exercise…. Choice is available.

·       Both the ways… nature will continue to roll its course. with wishes or Prayers….

·   The nature will have its course and say… like what we are witnessing under the Pandemic. Some 3 million are already buried. Did the prayers help them… questions … begging an answer…WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE……LET US REFLECT…?

·       Another great learning is contained in the following verses.

·        kaun rota hai kisi aur ki khatir ai dost

·        kaun rota hai kisi aur ki khatir ai dost

·        sabko apni hi kisi baat pe rona aaya

Who indeed cry for others...? worth thinking.
  • I have seen in the last 4 decades many calamities that have shaken the human conscience.
  • Yet, it did not impact any thing in the scheme of things… when a large number of soldiers or Police personnel are killed, hardly any stir happens.
  •  Everything goes on as before… these are stark realities… knowing which will make any one… Teflon… and philosophical…
  • Samtyvam Yoga Uchyate… nature .. like river flows… watch the flow and move with the flow of nature…. There in lies tranquility and peace of mind.

Be happy. Be safe.

  1. Everyone has to die one day or other. All living beings are mortal. Many Human beings chooses to die out of the worldly role they play like soldiers dying for their country, terrorist dying for a cause or religion, some dying slowly for their family, some doing death defying acts for glory; many animal and plant life becoming part of food chain, etc. All these happening has come to be seen as reality of the world we live in. Poets describe interpreting life and death, so as the movie makers join to make a living by dramatising such events and still many others struggle to grapple with this world reality depending upon their level of spiritual perception. The world will appear as you see it. But basic truth and purpose of life lies underneath all these.
