Day 38. Review - 7

Many  Hindus are blissfully ignorant about the tenets of their own religion.

But they are, sadly, in the forefront to criticize it,based on the half baked knowledge borrowed from “ others’.  One is not sure whether they deserve one’s sympathy or pity!

Ramayana and Mahabharat stories may be known to many of them, hopefully. Bhagavad  Gita a little. Bhagavat  Purana may be a distant dream.

With that back ground the following could be Latin to many. Still let us plod on.

   Upanishads

 Other important texts

It is reported that there were some 1008 plus Upanishad, but 108 are currently available. One can refer them on the net.

18 Puranas

Adi Shankara wrote commentaries on 10 major Upanishads. They are considered most important. Others are also conveying the same ideas, more or less, but called minor Upanishads.

Yoga Vasishta-

18 days dialogue between Vasishta Muni and Lord Sri Ram

Ten major Upanishads are-

1.     Brihadaranyaka

2.     Chandogya

3.     Mundaka

4.     Mandukya

5.     Katha

6.     Kena

7.     Prashn

8.     Tattiriya

9.     Aitreya

10.Isha

 Brhama sutra

Panachadasi

Patanjali's   Yoga Sutra

Narada Bhakti Sutra

Viveka Choodamani

SatakaTraya of Bathrihari

Ashtavakra Gita

Tripura Rahasya etc.

The above is an illustrative list. Like one cannot count the stars, it will be impossible to list out all Hindu scriptures. Each of the text consists of hundred, thousand or even lac  slokas. For eg. Mahabharath has one Lac Slokas. Who can list them  all?

Reading any one of the above texts will give  full insights into the core of Hindu thought process.

One book, one God, one temple or even one Sloka is sufficient to grasp the essentials of Hinduism, if heard from the right person- whom we call as Guru in our tradition- with the right  mind-set.

There are no 33 Crore gods or goddesses, which only semi-literates’ parrot.

There is only one God- God alone- called Brahman.

Ekam Sat, viprah Bahudha Vadanti.

To understand the true tenets of Hinduism will call for Nishta and Sradha, both are at a premium in Kali Yuga….

Be happy. Be safe.
