Day 239

 Justice for the  Judge

Former CJI has written a book titled Justice for the  Judge recently and he was interviewed about the book by different TV channels… Many of his judgements during his time as CJI have attracted wide public attention including the Ayodhya case .. he has covered many such areas in his book going by the interviews… in the course of such discussions the poem given below was referred, as  the same is given in the book. That prompted me to search  the net and I am reproducing the same…

No Enemies by Charles Mackay

You have no enemies, you say?
Alas! my friend, the boast is poor;
He who has mingled in the fray
Of duty, that the brave endure,
Must have made foes! If you have none,
Small is the work that you have done.
You've hit no traitor on the hip,
You've dashed no cup from perjured lip,
You've never turned the wrong to right,
You've been a coward in the fight.

I liked the above poem written in the early part of the last century(1915) very much…

  • every one after retirement will have certain views about his/her career and many will have no enemies…  and they take pride in saying that too either in person or during their farewell by others…
  • In such cases the above poem will give some food for thought …. In office life we will see many people allowing the sleeping lion sleep but  very few will try to wake it up ….
  • We have seen that in politics, in society, in organisations and in offices… those who take the former method will have one ending and the latter type will have another… today we know the fate of many Whistle blowers...
  • So the poem is worth reading…. It is obvious that one who goes to a battle will have some scars  and even some limbs may be lost… but if the body is in pristine shape without any scratch at all, then the above poem could be applicable..  worth reflecting ..

Penned only due to the sheer beauty of the idea/irony conveyed/depicted…
