Day 204

 Leaders Eat last

Simon Sinek tries to convey through this book why some teams pull together and others don’t in a very convincing manner with numerous examples.

  • This is primarily because, as the books cover states, “leaders are the ones who run head first into the unknown. They rush towards danger. They put their own interest aside to protect us or to pull us into the future.
  • The book tries to convey the traits of different type of leadership seen around the  world. The Book heavily relies on the experiences from US Military, where the leadership issues are definitely different than in commercial organizations.
  • Military concerns life and death issues, while in normal organisation profit or loss matters.
  • Hence the intensity of the problem differs, nevertheless one can learn from the experiences in Army to understand how teams are formed, led and work in such a  set up.
  • All said and done organisation especially in capitalistic economies work on profit making, often with scant respect to human resources. In that endeavor, human relations takes a back stage. So the perennial question is how to strike a balance between profit and human welfare.

·   Simon Sinek stresses that leadership is about taking care of people. Leaders are not responsible for the numbers alone.

·        A larger role is assigned to leaders, whether such leaders are available  in the market is another question. Hence the book ends with a futuristic chapter –We need more leaders.

Book will be very relevant to HRD personnel and leaders at the top level in any organisation.
