Six Thinking Hats
· Six Thinking Hats (STH) is a simple, effective parallel thinking
process that helps people to be more productive, focused and mindfully
involved.
· A powerful tool set, which once learned can be applied
immediately. Leader and team members can learn how to separate thinking into
six clear functions and roles.
· Each thinking role is identified with a colored symbolic
"Thinking Hat." By mentally wearing and switching "hats," one can easily focus or redirect thoughts, the conversation, or
the meeting, so says the author of the Book.
In homes,
organizations’ and public life, it is inevitable to discuss issues of common or
particular interest with others.
- When the number in the group is three and more
conflicting views will often arise resulting in lot of unproductive
discussions and often loss of precious time without any
tangible results.
- And if the parties present are of equal
strength, say politics, unions etc. the discussions will be often
longwinded and even acrimonious leading to disruptions and
discontinuation.
- Result, no decision will be taken for a long
time eg. wage negotiations.
- This is understandable
as different parties will have their own vested
interest.
Let us come to mundane places like home or office. Here also
often the discussions can get prolonged, if the members are strong and of more
or less equal position. Result is again delay and frustrations. In such a
scenario, the Six Thinking Hats (STH) methodology will
help to arrive at a decision comparatively fast.
By adopting this method, none will
be able to remain silent and take a fence sitters stand-as can be normally seen
in meetings.
STH approach will be found very useful especially
in office situations . The group will be able to voice all concerns openly and
the group head will be able to view the problem holistically and arrive at a
win/win decision. This is easier said than done in many places, because the
players today are not exposed to the benefits of STH strategy.
Hence, the Book is highly recommended to one
and all as it will help to
conduct discussions in an orderly and productive manner to
reach quicker decisions.
Be
peaceful.
