Day -119

My Employers -2

The second job was in The Indian Hume Pipe Company Limited, at their factory, Wadala. This was hardly 10 minutes walking distance from my father’s( government) quarters at Kings’ Circle. Though the office was from 8 AM, it was not bothersome, as the place was very near. The job was also to my liking, being an Accounts Assistant.

I recall with great fondness my then boss, Guru Murthy Sir. He is a perfect gentleman. Though of a huge build, he is very soft and mild spoken with an ever-smiling face. I have never seen him getting annoyed. Majority of the people in the section were around 60 years and veterans. They used to make a lot of halla bolla on even minor matters. But Sir used to be  ever quiet and dignified. A great learning for a youngster .

The job, being in a factory premises, many other lessons came in the way. Like the behavior of illiterate workers, their perennial need for advance, their despair, the benevolence of the management team… all left some impressionistic views at a very young age in life.

Some experiences I like to record.

  • This is the first time I wore a tie to face the interview which was held at Walchand Bhavan, Ballard Estate.
  • The interview was conducted by a very polished gentlemen who was the over all in charge of the Accounts department too. But sadly, he passed away after a few months later at a very young age, that left a deep scar in my mind at a young age. Even now I am able to recall his benign face… May his noble soul rest in peace!( The brittle nature of  human life stuck at the mind strongly.)
  • One of the jobs was to help the cashier to disburse salary to workers. That used to be a big jamboree with a lot of noise from the workers. But it was fun looking back.
  • The job helped me to get a hang of costing, which was my major in post-graduation too. The job was pleasant and without any problems at all.

This job lasted for 11 months as by then I got a job in RBI. The job carried a Bond. I paid the bond amount before moving to the new job. But the experience left a very lasting image in me.

Be happy. Be safe.
